Truphone on the iPhone now works without Wi-Fi
As you know,
Truphone for the iPhone is a simple application that provides significant
savings on international calls from your home country by routing outbound calls
over the internet using Wi-Fi.
But now, it is
even better.
Released today is
the enhanced version of Truphone for the iPhone. Two of the best features of the
new release are that you can:
Make calls even when not in Wi-Fi.
You can now make international calls through the internet, even when you are not in a Wi-Fi zone. Enjoy our amazing international call rates from your home country without the restriction of having to be in Wi-Fi*.
Receive inbound calls, and call other iPhones, for FREE.
When in Wi-Fi, you can now
receive calls for free from other Truphone users when you have the Truphone application open. This also
means that you can now free-call Nokia users, and other iPhone users who have
Truphone open, provided you are both in Wi-Fi.
The enhanced Truphone for the iPhone application is now available. If you have the application already, you can update it via the App Store on your iPhone. If you have not yet downloaded it, you can do so for free on your iPhone from the App Store or from iTunes, on from iTunes on your PC/Mac.
*Utilises your GSM network, so additional charges may apply
Wow this is a major release. I have been testing it since 24 hours and it is just great. The most interesting off all the features is the the FAVOURITES tap with Presence enablement. Alone the presence information is a KILLER application for business users and consumers. What a change it makes to know the status of your Truphone Buddies. Networking this via the truphone numbers is a stroke of genius and will make this APP ultimately VIRAL. Keep on developing apps like these and the mobile industry will never be the same.

It's definitly a revolution for the mobile industry. I am so impatient to test it in my country, because abroad connexon Internet is still too expensive.

I can't get this to work. My app doesn't update - and it definitely doesn't work unless I'm connected to WiFi. Is it possible that the app hasn't really updated yet on iTunes?

Victor - the new version of the app is definitely up on iTunes. If you are having dramas after trying to update again, please comment back or contact support@truphone.com

What charges may occur? Isn't it using unlimited data plan?
So is it now exactly using VOIP without a wifi connection?

Korhan - for more details on how the iPhone app works when you are not in Wi-Fi, visit http://www.truphone.com/pricing/truphone_anywhere.html
The app uses your GSM network to make a local call to our Truphone server. And then we do the rest.

Will presence be available for the Nokia app as well? Please don't forget about us :( The iPhone Truphone app is so much more advanced and capable.

Liron - presence on the Nokia has not be developed yet, but that doesn't mean to say it won't be down the track. How could we forget our Nokia customers - they have been with us the longest!

Thank you for your answer Truphone. What I wonder
now is it 100% possible to make VoIP calls over G3,
without Wi-Fi?
Posted by: Korhan | December 26, 2008 at 11:05 AM
Korhan - the Truphone iPhone app uses GSM, and not a 3G network, to initiate the Truphone calls, when not in Wi-Fi.
Does this answer your question?

Hi
I couldnt get the updated version of Truphone from ITunes. Is there a way to get it?
Thanks in advance.

@Liron, I am not sure if you are right. Yes the iPhone ((truphone)) app has presence and soon Yahoo Instant Messenger and MSN Messenger integration, as well as Twitter. With IM, Presence and Twitter it has three features the Nokia do not have. However the SIM forwarding, the ((truphone)) number as a +1 or +44 79788xxxxx range do only exist on the Nokia's and I love the truphone number. Since I adopted to use it as my main number I am free from any particular underlying SIM, abroad I use Chinese SIM's, US SIM's, German SIM's or the truphone SIM4Travel solution and my clients and customers always only need to remember my ((truphone)) number, which follows me around. This is currently in my sense still the best solution. On of the reasons I have two truphone accounts, actually 3. One on the iPhone, one on my Nokia E71 (which I use most often) and one on my iPod Touch. I must say the most calling friendly workable solution for me is still the ((truphone)) Nokia app. But YES don't get me wrong the iPhone is GREAT, in particular presence is fantastic for business use and I wish it would also exist on NOKIA's.

This looks pretty awesome, but I definitely wonder how this did not get shot down by Apple or ATT (at least in the US iTMS)? I'd feel a bit more confident if I knew that this app wasn't going to vanish at some point, given that Apple can remotely deactivate any app on every phone any time they please...

I updated my app today (dec 31) and it no longer connects and no phone service available. According to iTunes it was posted to fix some known bugs (probably the ones noted in a recent truphone email. Sadly the fix seems to have busted the app. Back to the drawing board!

Yes thank you.

David - the latest version of the iPhone app, which is now live on iTunes, has resolved the minor bugs that appeared recently. Have another go at downloading, and please let me know if you still encounter any issues.

That's an amazing news, i am using two voip services on iphone and the only issue was the availability of Wifi. I am always on the go and its hard to find Wifi on the way. Truephone got the edge on Vopium after this but i am using other connection as they are offering sync service.

I love the IT technology, my dad got me my first pc for my birthday and ever since I became a big IT freak. I started internet marketing for the last four months and still looking for material that can help my marketing.

I have TruPhone on my iPhone 4 and my iPad. I also have an inbound number. However, when I call the inbound number and the TruPhone application is open as it needs to be when it comes to my iPhone 4, it goes right to voicemail -- and my iPhone 4 does not ring. However, inbound calls to my TruPhone inbound number works (rings) when I tried it on my iPad. Does anyone know why it's not working on my iPhone 4. I can make calls out without a problem, and I get the voicemail when using my iPhone 4, but it doesn't ring so I can pick up on my iPhone 4.
Thanks, Eileen
