Instant Messaging and more announced at Macworld
We have been at Macworld (stand 3228 if you are there too) for a few days now, and were very excited to announce some rather exciting new features to our iPod touch and iPhone apps.
As you may have heard already, we have just launched Instant Messaging on the Truphone for the iPod touch app, meaning users can now have two-way IM conversations with MSN Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger and Google Talk users. You can also now make and receive Google Talk calls, with the call functionality for MSN Messenger to be added in the coming weeks.
IM and Google Talk calling will also appear in the Truphone for the iPhone app from the week commencing January 12.
As well as IM, we have launched Twitter on the iPhone app, meaning that you can now tweet, and follow what your Twitter contacts are tweeting about, from your phone!
But on top of these new features, we announced something that seems to have generated a real buzz on-line.
And that is the announcement that very shortly we will be launching Skype calling and IM on both the iPhone and the iPod touch apps. This means that you will be able to use Truphone to make and receive Skype calls and instant message.
All of these new features move Truphone closer to being what we like to call an 'all in one conversations hub', and allow you to have the freedom to speak with all of your contacts from within the one application.
We are very excited about every one of these new features, and can't wait to hear what you think of them.
If you have an iPhone or 2nd Generation iPod touch, and don't yet have Truphone, you can download them for free from iTunes. Download the iPhone app here, or the iPod touch app here.
...and for the Nokias?

It's great to see that you guys are hard at work and I think it's great that you've developed on a real, viable solution for mobile VoIP and IM, but I can't help but feel that your original product, the Nokia client, has become the "bastard brother". Truphone for the iPhone is so much more featured that it makes the Nokia client look handicapped and as a Nokia user and a Truphone fan, I feel left out in the cold.

Where is this feature? Opened Truphone today and I can't see any reference to Skype in there... Nor do I see an update in the AppStore (?).

Jonathan - this feature is not yet live, but rest assured, when Skype is live, you will hear about it on this blog straight away. It is due to come out sometime this week. Stay tuned.
Liron and Ian - sorry to hear that you think we are forgetting about our Nokia users. This is not our intention, and adding new features to our Nokia app is certainly on our agenda. We don't want you guys missing out on all the fun!

Hi,
Will you have support for SkypeIn and SkypeOut in the version of Truphone for Iphone that you are releasing this week?
Posted by: Chris | January 13, 2009 at 02:28 PM
You are very keen Chris - great to hear.
It comes out 'week commencing January 12', so it will be out some time during this week.
And the app will allow you to make AND receive Skype calls, to answer your second comment.
Stay tuned for more!

Hi guys - any news on skype on truphone yet. Its the 15th today and there is still no new update in the App store.
When this new feature is added - can we dial out using skype out on truphone anywhere, (i.e. out of wifi)?

Hey Guys,

I look forward to using this new functionality!

They probably love the hit rate on their website a bit too much...
Posted by: Chris | January 16, 2009 at 04:31 PM
sigh .... The only reason I got the app is for skype...... Goodness I hope it's soon.... Also what type of headset or mic/ whatever do you need... In order to use it on the Ipod? I figured you could at least call and hear over the speaker and just not be able to talk back but you hear nothing.... Is it all within this special headsset?

Well its the 19th. ya said beginning week of the 12th and the weeks pretty much up. Where is it? By the way how can you give a time line for the release with Apple? I thought Apple updates the apps when they wanted with no time line. Just wondering. Do they give you a date for your release or do you dictate the release date? it would be good to know.

Hi guys,
An update on the situation with the new Truphone app would be much appriciated. Thanks!

Guys, I'd say they have techie issues - as truphone have not replied to a thread since the 13th. Might be a longer wait than we thought.
I agree with you Chris - I bet they are loving the hype!
Truphone - can we have answers to our questions (even if its not an eta, you could wet our appetite with answers to questions on the app).
Posted by: Nick | January 20, 2009 at 10:26 AM
There is a very real risk that Truphone could find itself with bad hype rather than the good kind as it remains silent. It makes me nervous as a new customer who has just topped up. Is the company in trouble?
Posted by: David | January 20, 2009 at 11:51 AM
yes i agree.. that is not honest at all.. and not looking good for the company. SPEAK UP!
Posted by: Louise | January 20, 2009 at 01:50 PM
Truphone if there is one thing I have learned in business is always contact your customer before he contacts you. If you know there is going to be a delay you should let your customers know. They would respect your company more and know that you have our genuine interest at heart. Good or bad you should always communicate.

OK, No News Is Nimbuzz :(
Posted by: MK | January 21, 2009 at 08:38 AM
The stupid thing is that it might just be a delay on Apple's behalf which is out of their control. The lack of response makes it seem like the thing isn't working or something. People don't mind delays (as such) as long as they're justified and they're kept up to date about them.

As jizz-tastic as people like to believe the Jesus-phone is it would be nice to get a decent update to the Nokia client as its getting to the stage where its simply stupid.

This is really annoying! Don't you understand that all the people that take time to comment on your blog are the true ambassadors for your company and truphone products. We are the people that are active on the social media on the net, and you decide to just ignore us with no news! Can't you see the negative posts that build up on your OWN corporate blog! These are comments that spread around the world, and will stay on the net forever! And this is all because you do not communicate....Don't you have anyone in your company that realise the importants of communication? With the recent good press about your company I find it unbelivable that you are destroying it all - by not communicating with your true followers... :(
Hopefully this will give you some thoughts and help you in the right direction to continue your success.

well so you know your comments will be deleted. Mine were. Copy your comments for your own memories.

Maybe some people need to calm down and be patient. I would also love to see Skype capability added soon but if it were not for Truphone I could not use my Ipod to make any calls at all. I am sure they are working on it. I would rather they take there time and make it right then rush it .
Posted by: Brian | January 21, 2009 at 09:59 PM
I know what your saying. Yes be calm but its not cool that you don't get a response that's really the issue here. I don't mind waiting. I do mind that the give you a date and don't communicate with there users when that date comes and goes. especially when they have been commenting on this post and confirming the date several times. Just be honest and say hey the apps is delayed because of so and so. at least we know where we all stand. I see this with everyones apps. Daily and it gets old. Icall, Newber and several other have been waiting to get feedback and are horrible about keeping their customers in the loop. I just don't see how that can be good business. I would much prefer to be upfront and honest with my customers.
