Skype calling launches on Truphone

Posted by Truphone on March 05, 2009

You have heard the news, and now it is here.

Skype has arrived on Truphone!

Skype

Our staggered rollout of this new feature is now complete, and all Truphone for the iPhone and iPod touch users can now start making (and receiving) Skype calls and instant messages.

All you need is a Skype ID, and once you have logged in to your Skype account in the IM section of the app, you will see all of your Skype contacts and be ready to start.

And if you are in Wi-Fi, and so is the Skype person you are calling, the call will be completely free. If you are not in Wi-Fi, you can still make Skype calls because the app uses our Truphone Anywhere technology to connect the call.

We are extremely excited about this, and hope that every iPhone and iPod touch user is too.

For those who don't have the app, download the iPhone app here or the iPod touch app here. If you need any help using this new feature, please email our support team.

(please note, at this stage, you cannot call Skype Out contacts, add new Skype users to your account via the Truphone application, or make group calls or chats - but we are working on them!)

Thanks, but there is one big problem.
Most of the time all or almost all of my Skype contacts appear to be offline until I call them or they call me.
Right now I see just one Skype contact online when I login via Truphone, but I see 10 contacts online when I login from PC.

It is not working for me either. The contact list loaded properly but I am unable to place any call to anyone on my contact list nor receive any call.

Truphone vs Nimbuzz vs Fring

- Truphone, Nimbuzz, Fring.

I have tried all three applications on my iPhone and tested them for voice quality by making calls to Skype contacts from Truphone, Nimbuzz, Fring.

In my experience Nimbuzz is best for calling Skype from iPhone 3G (via Wi-Fi). The voice quality is best with Nimbuzz application.

Fring application Voice quality is not good. And Truphone application voice quality is just little better then Fring.

Ratings go from 1 being the worse, and 5 being the best.

Voice Quality:

Nimbuzz ( 5 )

Truphone ( 3 )

Fring ( 1 )

Nimbuzz application is best for calling Skype contacts from iPhone 3G (Via Wi-Fi).

I agree with Chang, i have tested Fring, Nimbuzz, Truphone and Vopium but if we talk about premium voice quality i would go for Vopium.com. I found Vopium very good in case of voice quality among all of other VoIP applications that i have used so far.

I am still on my way to explore skype on truphone -

George!! where do you rate Vopium?

Just for the record...I'm interested in Truphone/Skype for the Nokia platform. I already use Truphone for VoIP while traveling. Great setup!

If you are seeing that your Skype contacts are offline when you believe them to be online, please send us an email at support@truphone.com so that we can take a look into it.

I actually believe the dialer using VoIP on Truphone on the iPhone is now fast and very reliable. The skype integration has become much better, my contacts are loading up, also it takes a while.

Now I would re-rate currently truphone above nimbuzz above fring. Why? Truphone offers integrated VoiP dialing with OK (also could be better) Skype integration.

In Japan, using Iphone over 3G i/o wifi to call a Skype contact this number 0345209257 is dialed unsuccessfully.
Chat is Ok. Truphone cud u please advise how to use 3G data service for Skype connections correctly?

Aiki - can you please send us an email at support@truphone.com with a brief summary of the issue, so that we can investigate.

Thanks,
Truphone

Does Truphone support calls to Skype from Nokia? Because most of my friends have Skype, but few have Nokia phones (for Truphone -> Truephone calls) and nobody has iPhone?

Anton - at this stage, our Nokia app does not support Skype calling.

I give up. I cannot find how to setup a Skype user to call from Truphone.

Michael - have you seen our user guide? It details how to set up an IM account (so your Skype account), and then how to make calls to the users you have set in this account. See http://www.truphone.com/pdf/Truphone_User_Guide_IPHONE.pdf (starting from page 18).

Our IM feature pulls in your contacts on Skype, but you cannot add new Skype contacts from within the Truphone application. If you go into Skype and add new contacts, they will appear the next time in Truphone though.

Does this help answer the question?

when will truphone for blackberry app be able to accept skype ?

It is something that we are looking at Patrick, but we can't confirm any timings at this stage.

With regard to the Skype users not showing as available when you set up the IM account... you have to wait until the Skype users log out and back in before they sync with your Truphone. My tip is to add a Skype user to Trufriends by, creating a new contact, selecting VoIP gateway, and entering in skypeuserid@skype as the user id
