The red phone box still has a future

BT is currently running a competition looking for ideas for the UK's 6,700 red phone boxes that, because of the mobile phone, are fast becoming redundant around the country. Guardian journalist Victor Keegan invited suggestions through a Twitter post, resulting in a whole range of ideas, from using the boxes as shower cubicles to turning them into local tourist points.

Another idea that has come up is that of turning the iconic red phone boxes into 'stations' for burgeoning internet telephony companies, such as Truphone. Not only would this keep the boxes linked to their traditional telecommunication roots, but would utilise next generation technology and bring them into the digital age. As well as this it would provide free internet telephone calls for anyone calling another web telephone.

What do you think? Should we keep the telephone heritage, use them for something else or simply get rid of them?

Brilliant idea! Its time to reclaim these wonderful little boxes and give them a new life, a new purpose. They were, in their day, a remarkable advance in communication. Lets build on that legacy!
