Upgraded Truphone version for the Android now available
We are very excited to announce that an all-new version of Truphone for the Android is available now at the Android Market.
The new application has some significant upgrades including:
- More native features, including IM, making this application faster than ever before
- Upgraded, more intuitive interfaces
- An all-new dialer
- An upgrade of the Twitter section
- Better account management features, now level with our iPhone application
- Working now on the HTC Hero
The new version is available now, so visit the Android Market today to try this faster, more responsive, and easier to use version of Truphone on your Android.
How to get the new version for free today
STEP 1: If you are a current Truphone on the Android user, delete your current version of the application (Go to 'Settings', then 'Applications', 'Manage Applications', select 'Truphone', then 'Uninstall')
STEP 2: Go to the Android Market and search for 'Truphone'
STEP 3: Select the Truphone application (there will be only one, as this version has replaced the previous version)
STEP 4: Download this version (for free!)
These upgrades are on top of the fantastic features already available on Truphone on the Android, including:
- Low cost international calling to any landline or mobile phone
- Calling and instant messaging to Skype and Google Talk friends
- Instant messaging to MSN, AIM and Yahoo! friends
- Use anywhere you have phone coverage, as it does not use Wi-Fi to connect calls
To find out more about Truphone on the Android, go to the Truphone website.
In the nicest possible way, I respectfully request an explanation from Truphone of why WiFi to WiFi calls are not being supported by even this latest version of Truphone Android.
I used to think it was because the Android OS didn't support it but Google has dispelled that notion - see http://tcrn.ch/8003
I also figure it can't be the mobile operators blocking it since the same operators haven't blocked it on the iPhone, Win Mo and Nokia handsets.
So please, kindly explain where the problem lies with Android. The absence of Wifi-to-Wifi calls on Android is frustrationg - not knowing why is even more so.
Thanks.

@Louis it is possible to make wifi to wifi calls via Android, I did this yesterday evening via Sipdroid/Sipgate, to my wife who is on holiday in Turkey (I have an HTC Magic and she has a Hero).

@Tim, thanks for the tip. I actually tried Sipdroid just yesterday but failed to get it working. I must admit I didn't try very hard though, because it just looked a little too crude for my taste - almost like a work-in-progress experiment.
I will give it another shot though if I can get some detailed instructions on how to use. I couldn't immediately find a way to create a Sipdroid account yesterday - I assume one needs one.

Thanks Truphone
However, I just learnt from your support that my account (Truphone number, and associated data) that I have had since the early days of Truphone (November 2007) cannot be migrated from my Nokia handset to my new Android phone!
Thanks alot.
I do not understand why this is an issue for you?
It certainly isn't good customer service!

@thatalias - Although it seems strange that we cannot transfer your account from Nokia to Android, there is a reason.
And that is that the Android and Nokia applications are very different.
For example, the Android application does not make Wi-Fi calls, and Android app users do not receive a Truphone number when they sign up.
Given that these apps are so different, we require a new account to be set up.
However, once you have created a new account, please contact support@truphone.com and they will transfer any credit that you have across to the new account.
Apologies for the inconvenience of doing this.

Can you tell me if Truephone supports group chat (text) for Skype on Android?
Thanks.

Hi Jason - at the moment, Truphone does not support a group chatting for Skype.
