6 great iOS 5 features for business travellers

Later this year, Apple will release the highly anticipated iOS 5 – a free operating system upgrade for all compatible devices: iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. iCloud will be released simultaneously which will keep your iOS devices and Macs backed up and synchronised over the air giving you a seamless experience.

With over 200 new features and updates to wade through we thought we could save you some time and show you six of the best features for business users.

1. Notification Centre

Notifications

One of the first things you will notice is the Notification Centre, which a downwards swipe on the home screen will bring up. It gives you a roundup of all new emails, texts and calendar events on the fly, as well as other useful information, like local weather and latest stock market information.

New notifications will appear briefly at the top of the screen without interrupting your work flow. Notifications can be accessed from the lock screen with a swipe on any item, which will take you directly to the item (i.e. respond to an email or hear a voicemail).

2. Reminders

Reminders

This gives you quick to manage to-do lists, which are compatible with iCal, Outlook and iCloud that allow for location triggered reminders.

This is particularly handy for someone who travels often, for example, you can set a reminder to exchange some cash when you arrive at the airport.

3. iMessage

Messages

Envy those using BlackBerry Messenger no longer! iMessage allows you to securely send messages, pictures, videos, locations and contacts through Wi-Fi or 3G.

This coupled with our international data rates is a recipe for unbridled communication.

4. Calendar

Calendar

The calendar app now supports yearly view for iPad and weekly view for both iPhone and iPod touch, it also gives you increased control over events and allows you to share calendars with colleagues, family and friends through iCloud.

5. Airplay Mirroring

Airplay

Have an Apple TV? Well now you can wirelessly display what is on your iPad on any screen simultaneously, this will be great for presentations and collaborative work in meetings.

6. PC Free

PCfree

You no longer need to link to a computer have an iOS device, all updates are done over the air. This means that if you like the sound of all these new features you can pick up an iOS 5 device at the airport and be reading the latest copy of the Economist by the time you’re on the flight!

Finally, one important thing to remember. Keeping synchronised when traveling will constantly nibble through your megabytes, so to ensure you don’t return with a mammoth bill take a Tru Business Micro-SIM next time you travel and enjoy painless roaming.
