How people use Wi-Fi in-flight

Wifi-onboard In the US, Wi-Fi is becoming a common option during flights, and as more people get smartphones and tablets like the iPad, the growth and demand will continue to increase.

Mashable published an interesting infographic yesterday about how people are using Wi-Fi during their flights. See the infographic.

Some of the interesting findings of the research included:

  • Nearly 80% of mobile users are on either an iPhone or iPad (1/3 iPads and 2/3 iPhones), compared with just 4% using BlackBerry
  • 67% mix work & play during in-flight internet sessions, with only 6% using Wi-Fi just for work (or so they say!)
  • Facebook accounts for 61% of all social network traffic

Exactly why are roaming charges so high?

Magnifying-glass-and-money-(small) Over the past few months we have seen significant rise in media attention around international roaming fees (1 2 3 4 and many more). There are innumerable (often frightening) accounts of customers experiencing bill shock after they’ve used their phones abroad, but it is only now that the media are really looking at alternative solutions to the traditional networks and that finally people are asking the question; “why is it so darned expensive?”
